ARTIST STATMENT
These works stem from my interest in the omnipresence of the largest source of light, the Sun. In thinking about the sun's role to feed and maintain tree growth, I constantly come back to the idea that wood continues to hold light through it's alternative forms. This inspires me to create wooden sculpture that once again illuminates the light that the trees once had. I extract light through a simple yet bold reveal within my sculptures. I aim to preserve the original beauty and grace of the wood itself, through minimal alterations and intrusions. Each walnut piece is carefully crafted by my hands, and meant to honor the monumental freestanding structure of the tree, creating a new pillar of Light---
